The most destroying of which occurred in Xinmi, situated in the region of Henan. A few gas blasts in the mine have left rescuers to discover sixty four dead bodies, and as yet looking for eighty four more. Hurray News and Reuters UK have written about this occurrence from two varying perspectives, and this originates from who they accept is answerable for the episodes. Yippee News provides details regarding the occurrences as though they are the deficiency of the managers controlling the mines. In a statement taken from Li, whose nephew was caught in the mine, and is yet to be discovered says that There was a ton of talk in the mine that the mine manager was nothing more than a bad memory. A ton of the excavators didn't care for him. The China Labor Bulletin, a Hong Kong based human rights bunch says that there are more than twenty thousand coal mineshaft related passings every year in China. They accept that the explanation behind this originates from the coal mining supervisors' absence of regard for wellbeing required for the laborers to work in great conditions. The gathering accepts that there are numerous fatalities that go unreported by mine supervisors so they won't be dependent upon punishments, and furthermore that their mine won't be closed down. Numerous individuals have assembled outside of the Xinmi mine with the expectation that they will get some updates on their relatives sooner. From what Yahoo News has detailed, the issue of this specific mining mishap, and different ones too lies with the mining managers' absence of thoughtfulness regarding security. Reuters UK covers the occurrences that occurred on Wednesday centers around a great deal of administrative related issues that appear to have caused these passings. China's administration depends intensely on their own creation of coal as a modest method to discover vitality. The administration squeezes excavators and mine supervisors to amplify their creation of coal. Li Dun, a humanist at Beijing's Qinghua University, says tha... <! The entrepreneur is so used to relying on only himself to make all decisions as well as do most of the work that this thought is never at the forefront. Old habits become very hard to break and it becomes impossible to imagine a situation where the entrepreneur is not an irreplaceable part of the business machinery. Whatever the entrepreneurâs background (accounts, programming, marketing, or creativity) there is a high likelihood of them being essential and overworked.2) A Difficult RealizationThough it is very hard to come to terms with the realization that you as an entrepreneur have the option of making yourself redundant, it is a vital step t oward taking the business further. The key here is to begin to work on the business instead of for the business. This statement is more than a play on words. If you take a step back from the daily grind of running a business, you will have that much more time to spend on planning, strategizing and setting goals for the future and growth of the business. If you do not take this step back, you remain self-employed with many, often overpaid, assistants.3) Achieving RedundancyThis may be an easier task to accomplish for some business models than others, but if it is achieved, then a self-sustaining robust business can be created. According to Guy Hargreaves, a network marketing professional, there are four key steps that an entrepreneur can take to work toward making themselves redundant to the daily workings of their own business. These are:Hire the right people This means finding and bringing on board people who share your vision and will fit into the company culture you are trying t o foster. Your task then is to show these people a clear vision and step out of the way to allow them to execute.Delegate the actual work to the best people In order to achieve redundancy, you will need to delegate important tasks to the right people. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the most capable and trustworthy people are delegated to these tasks.Work on their growth With the right people, you then need to work on their growth and development to make them capable of taking responsibility for the work and outcomes as well as to trust them with major operational decisions.Encourage team members to grow and develop on their own Along with your work on developing the team, encourage the members to find ways to grow and develop themselves also. These four steps are explored further in the rest of the article. As a redundant boss, you will have time to think and plan again while your empowered team actually runs the business.Bad leaders spend the maximum time on the job, micr omanaging and pursuing novelty for its own sake until they become a burden on the organization. Good leaders spend the minimum time on the job, but everything they do has a positive effect.â (Yoshito Hori, President GLOBIS)HOW TO MAKE YOURSELF REDUNDANTOnce the entrepreneur has realized the need to make herself redundant and feels that the time is right to do so, the following steps can be taken to ensure that the company is in the right hands.1) Hiring the Right PeopleThe first key step is to ensure that the right people are brought onboard. Often, the number one mistake cited by entrepreneurs is hiring the wrong person for the job. An employee who is a mismatch with the job requirements or the company culture can end up being a critical mistake. Getting the hiring right in the first go will help the company avoid expensive and time consuming consequences. It will also help the company hit the ground running by filling a gap and completing a team.An entrepreneur needs to keep the following points in mind when hiring for a position:Understand the Strengths and Culture of the Organization The smaller the company, the more vital it is to ensure that every single person is the right fit for not only their own job but also the organizational culture as a whole. A good place to begin this understanding is to conduct a strengths assessment for the organization. Much like a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats), this assessment can help highlight personality and behavioral traits as well as natural talents that are needed for the business. If the owner of the business is not aware of these strengths and how to leverage them, it will show through in a faulty hiring process. Candidates will not be assessed against correct criteria and required competencies may be missed out.Assess the Candidateâs Practical Experience Another key point is to assess a candidateâs practical experience according to the skills you need not only at the moment , but also to grow the team and the organization. By assessing future compatibility, the candidate will be able to grow and expand as the company grows and expands.Assess the Candidateâs Specific Strengths Check whether the candidate in question is strong in the areas needed to perform the job he is being considered for. These strengths should fill any existing gaps in the team to ensure that the full talents of team are leveraged for optimal company performance.Assess the Candidateâs Cultural Fit This very vital area may be pushed into the background if the company manages to find a candidate with the right skill set and strengths needed for a particular job. However, a fit into the culture of the organization can often make the biggest difference between a strong team member and a weak one. The candidate needs to work well with others and share the same values and goals. The interview process can help identify traits that will show the potential to fit well into the existin g culture provided that there is a prior understanding of the key elements that form the culture.According to Mike Laven, CEO of Currency Cloud, great people make a great company and itâs all about the team. For a new business that may have very little money, a strategy in process, and the beginnings of a product, the right team becomes even more essential. He cites three main points to focus on when bringing on new people.Do They Want to Practice? The key to finding the right employee isnât just finding someone who is willing to stay late or work on the weekends. This hard work may just be to impress the boss. Instead, it means finding people who want to practice and not just win the game. In business terms, it will mean an employee who focuses on the fundamentals of the business to get these building blocks right. This may not be the most exciting element of the new business, but it is the one that will lead to the creation of a strong, self-sustaining business.Do They Fit t he Culture? As mentioned briefly above, getting the culture right is an important component of success. This Harvard Business Review article goes so far as to state that culture will trump strategy every time. So any new employee needs to fit in with the existing culture and be passionate about creating a customer base and building up the company.Do They Learn? With smaller companies with less defined departmental roles and tasks, it is important to assess an employeeâs ability to learn rather than what they have worked on in the past. A candidate may have the best résumé, but if they are not able to learn from their jobs and apply it to their current work, then the prior work experience may become useless. Within a job role in a small company, an employee needs to be able to quickly learn from a mistake and rectify it to ensure that it does not happen again.Tips on Hiring from Richard BransonRichard Branson is arguably one of the worldâs most successful and enigmatic entr epreneurs. He cites hiring employees as one of the most important jobs that an entrepreneur has. His tips include:A great personality goes a long way. A candidate with the right skill set may rub a team the wrong way right out the door. To make sure this does not happen, Branson suggests conducting group interviews to find someone who is fun, friendly and caring.A résumé is just a piece of paper. Apart from some jobs such as a doctor or a scientist, the number of degrees on a résumé may not be the best indicator of suitability.A person who has multiple degrees in your field isnt always better than someone who has broad experience and a great personality. When is the right time for someone new? At times, a cozy work environment needs to be shaken up with a new person. The time for this needs to be assessed organically and cannot be planned.Great hiring takes time and a healthy dose of curiosity. You need to meet a lot of people, ask them about themselves and their careers, and tel l them about yourself and your company in turn. So relax and be yourself the people you eventually choose are, after all, going to play big parts in your shared adventure of building a business.2) The Importance of DelegatingEntrepreneurs will often find themselves bogged down by the overwhelmingly huge pile of work involved in running a new business. To find more hours in the day to finish more work, entrepreneurs need to delegate responsibly to their teams. Some of the excuses for failure to delegate given by entrepreneurs include:Iâm too busy to take the time to delegate/train a team memberIâm too busy to explain tasks or projectsIâm the only person who can do the job rightIâm the most responsible person for the jobIf I delegate, Iâll lose controlWith excuses such as these, work piles up, there is a back log and those tasks that actually require the entrepreneurâs attention get lost in busywork. On the other hand, people with a great skill set and experience will be sitting around doing nothing to earn their salaries. Employees who are motivated and energized will lose interest, and dissatisfaction and lack of productivity will become endemic. The way to avoid this situation is to delegate responsibly by giving opportunities to employees who are interested in learning new skills, gaining knowledge and connecting with the organization. This delegation can become an important tool for motivating employees. These motivated employees mean a productive organization. How to DelegateWith the importance of delegation established, there are some important points to keep in mind while doing so.Identify the best person for the job The best person for the task of delegation may not be the most experienced or most knowledgeable, but one who is motivated and eager to learn. This person demonstrates the potential to be able to handle more responsibility. This person can be identified by getting to know all your employees in depth, their strengths and challeng es as well as their interests.Clearly identify project goals and key steps Once the person has been selected, make sure that you explain the project goals and steps required to be performed in detail. Ask pointed questions such as âWhat part of the process will you take care of first?â, âWhat will you require additional resources for?â, âWhat part is unclear?âEstablish clear milestones and deadlines Most entrepreneurs are used to setting their own milestones and achieving them, so they may not realize that a person new to the task may need some clearer direction. Ensure that they have clearly defined and understood milestones with reporting structures in place. This will allow the project to stay on track and the entrepreneur to stay on top of the project.Provide frequent feedback A beginner will need to receive balanced feedback on a regular basis. This means both positive and negative feedback to ensure that they know how they stand and whether they are meeting de adlines and timelines as well as expectations.Review progress on completion Once the project is completed, take the time to review progress with the employee who was in charge. This will help identify best practices as well as those steps which may need to be changed or modified for next time. It will also allow the boss to see how much capacity the employee has to learn and grow. What Not to DelegateKnowing what to delegate and when is vital to ensuring an entrepreneurâs redundancy from the business. However, there are always a few keys tasks that need to be performed by the business owner herself. These key tasks determine how the organization will grow and function and should not be entrusted to possibly untried and less experienced individuals.Strategic Vision and Values It is the head of an organization that can properly provide vision and direction to the company. Without this direction, the company will not be able to function and move forward cohesively, despite a promi sing idea and product.Brand Positioning It is the head of the organization that needs to study the market and understand the companyâs product offering in detail. Often, entrepreneurs are the ones with clear ideas in this area. The details of this positioning may require expert term members to step in, but a general direction should be provided by the head.Hiring Since finding the right people at the onset helps set the tone for the organization, it may be a good idea to keep the hiring in the domain of the entrepreneur. This could be limited to the key team members or senior officials for the company. The vital element here is to make sure that the new hires fit into the culture and vision of the company.Firing Difficult decisions, when it comes to employees, are never anyoneâs favorite task to perform. But having a CEO address this in keeping with HR guidelines and practices can help the company better understand what went wrong and how hiring practices can be improved.3 ) Team Growth And DevelopmentThe last two factors for effectively making yourself redundant are to ensure that team development and growth remain a key focus for both the entrepreneur and the team itself. This will help the company and team grow together and keep pace with new developments and turns a company may take. When developing a management team and equipping them to handle operations, it is vital to understand that most of them will need some support and training to fill their new roles in the right way. Some of these people may require formal training, while others may need mentoring and support. Some ways in which teams can be supported in their path to development include:Have a yearly training budget dedicated to helping the team upgrade and augment their existing skills.Establish mentoring and coaching programs to help people proactively pursue these endeavors.Establish job rotation and cross-training programs to give employees insight into all areas of the business.Help set learning goals for the employees for both personal ambitions and professional skills. The Renaissance: Essay 1 revisited The Renaissance was a time of cultural and social revolution in England, at least in the south of it. The plays and playwrights of the time challenged the societal norms and pushed boundaries into never before thought of areas, this essay will show how Renaissance drama was subversive and created the world we live in today. The two plays I will be focusing on are: William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night and Thomas Middleton s Women beware Women . Both share similar themes yet go about them very differently to one another. Twelfth Night (or What You Will ) was written in 1601, near the middle of Shakespeare s career, and a mere 15 years before his death in 1616. Considered by many critics as one of his greatest comedies, Twelfth Night is about deception, disguises and madness, along with the bizarre things caused by love itself. This play is also one of Shakespeare s plays that include a female protagonist, pretending to be a man. (At the time of the play all parts where played by men, so Viola would have been a man pretending to be a women who was also pretending to be a man!) Viola, the female protagonist, like many of Shakespeare s heroines is likeable from the get go with no real character flaws to note of and no serious faults to note of. (Discounting her decision to dress as a man, as it sets the plot in motion.) And while other character s love is a fickle thing, such as Orsino who can t decide between Olivia and Kenneth Cannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07105400736814905796noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593123773209657960.post-19691790180306732332020-05-06T23:19:00.001-07:002020-05-06T23:19:35.287-07:00The Declaration Of Independence, Immigration Policy And... During the course of this class I found many of the topics to be very interesting. The four topics that gained the most interest from me was; The Declaration of Independence, Immigration Policy and The Constitution. Throughout this essay I will discuss why I found these topics interesting. The first topic I will discuss is The Declaration of Independence. According to the Heritage Foundation the Declaration of Independence is the founding document of the American political tradition. It articulates the fundamental ideas that form the American nation: All men are created free and equal and possess the same inherent, natural rights. While doing research on The Declaration I discovered many interesting facts on constitution.com. The firstâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He had originally included information condemning the British promotion of the slave trade. In spite of Jeffersonââ¬â¢s objections criticism of the slave trade was removed. Another interesting piece of information I found was that some of the most famous lines in the Declaration of Independence were inspired by Virginiaââ¬â¢s Declaration of Rights by George Mason. Mason said: all men are born equally free and independent.â⬠Jefferson s Declaration of Independence said: We hold these truths to be s elf-evident, that all men are created equal. Mason listed man s ââ¬Å"natural Rightsâ⬠as ââ¬Å"Enjoyment of Life and Liberty, with the Means of acquiring and possessing Property, and pursuing and obtaining Happiness and Safety.â⬠Jefferson listed man s inalienable rights as Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The last thing I found interesting about this topic is no one who signed the Declaration of Independence was born in the United States. The United States didn t exist until after the Declaration was signed, but eight of the signers were born in colonies that would become the United States. The next topic I found very interesting was Immigration Policy. Immigration policy is any policy of a state that deals with the transit of persons across its borders into the country, but especially those that intend to work and stay in the country. Immigration policies can range from allowing no migration at all to allowing most types of migration, such as free immigration. The word stress has been used al lot nowadays. To us stress means something that puts pressure on some part of our life. However this is just a small piece in the puzzle. We will write a custom essay sample on Clearer Understanding of the Stress Phenomenon or any similar topic only for you Order Now Stress is an explanatory factor in numerous personal or social problems. In other words Stress is the normal response of your body to any change. We feel it when we pass from a warm to a cold room, when we run for a bus. Stress prepares us for change by pumping adrenaline into your system. In this process our muscles get tense, our heart pounds, our blood pressure rises. We use this mechanism for adapting and surviving. However if this response is constantly triggered and surpasses illness or even death may follow. We as humans cannot avoid stress, we can nonetheless learn to use to our advantage. Many people have numerous problems that occurred from stress. Problems like cholesterol, insomnia, high blood pressure, and stomach ulcers, chronic back pain and other very serious and fatal diseases. However you can learn to make life easy for yourself by many stress management techniques such as breathing right, eating right, exercising, and using relaxation techniques. In the early 19th century, scientists tried to explain the phenomena of how humans are affected by our surroundings and daily activities. Claude Bernard was one of those scientists that tried to prove the bodyâ⬠s motions during a stress related event. He emphasized how the underlying conditions affect free and in depended life. He said ââ¬Å"every living animal tends to maintain a state of internal stability in spite of changes in the external environmentâ⬠. Scientist Walter Cannon was another pioneer in the studies of psychology that gave his work recognition in todayâ⬠s society. He concluded from his work that animals or primate men, when confronted by danger to their internal equilibrium, would either prepare to fight or to take flight. However it took the work of Hans Selye to provide clearer understanding of the stress phenomenon. He noted that various factors like chills, traumas, and infections produced a stereotyped syndrome characterized by hypertrophy and hyperactivity. Then in 1950 he introduced the symptoms as ââ¬Å"stressâ⬠. Today we still donâ⬠t have the unanimous definition of the term stress. Many people give different definitions to the word. Some give it the meaning that is, the group of biochemical changes, which typically occur in the organism when the internal equilibrium is threatened. Others psychologists use the term ââ¬Å"stressâ⬠to talk of a stimulus. There are many psychological reactions to stress. These biochemical reactions may be benign, but in some cases they alter the bodyâ⬠s functioning to the point of inducing illness or death. Many of the reactions are well known like the heart rate increases, muscles tend to contract and a lot of the time perspiration increases. All of these reactions are very little for importance. Emotional and behavioral reactions to stress are often more apparent than psychological reactions since everyone could see. Thatâ⬠s why when a human being reacts to a stimulus you can see if he or she laughs cries, jumps. Emotions and behaviors due to culture vary, personality varies and time period always changes. Another very important criteria that help define stress are the present of stimuli or other agents that make us react to stress. However this criterion varies because of different traits that the human being may have. Many laboratories testing on humans have been done to show that humans react to different stimuli in different ways. Humans in many testing were subjected to loud noises or sometimes would be shown stimuli like a dog barking or even a snake. All of these things were great stimuliâ⬠s that affected the human in different ways. Stress may not be triggered by all the stimuli to which we are exposed but by the action of certain psychological factors, which make us perceive certain stimuli as dangerous, or threatening to life. Also perceptions of danger depend on many things. For example, past experiences, cognitive expectations which is the way you interpret the situation, personality, and your emotional factors. Many researchers have found several general rules that depict stress agents. One is that pervious experiences of stress agents diminish the stress felt. It has also shown that the greater the stimulation the greater the stress felt. Another stimuli is emotions. With the increase of emotional intensity of an experience the lower the stress level becomes. However the stress level can never be at zero because that means that youâ⬠re dead. When a person has a very low stress level it isnâ⬠t good. Low levels of stress can cause symptoms similar to those of intense stress. Many researchers use the word stress to describe not only reactions that humans or animals give off, but also the many internal pressures that provoke these reactions. Another name for this is ââ¬Å"stress agentâ⬠. Hans Selye defined the stress agent as any demand made on the mind or body. Some people think that only life threatening situations are stressful for human beings. I personally believe that stress has to do with the individual person and how he perceives the stressor. Stress agents can be negative or positive, pleasant or unpleasant. Some say that anticipation of an event is more stressful then the actual event. One example of this is skydiving. When you get to specific height and you have to jump you become so stressed that you are afraid to jump. Even if you know you wonâ⬠t die. On the other hand an unexpected occurrence can cause greater stress on a person. Like a car accident can cause great stress because of amnesia or sometimes even comas. When a human is stressed it is being in a state of psychological alert. This provides a better perception of danger. When confronted with a dangerous situation we as humans think of two things that we can do flight or fight. You read "Clearer Understanding of the Stress Phenomenon" in category "Essay examples" We use fight when we want to defend ourselves, or flight when we want to live or survive the danger by not interfering with it. However a very high level of activation can bring about a state of physical or psychological distress. In todayâ⬠s world fight or flight response is very useful. It can help us to escape a fire or survive a disaster. When the body prepares for a fight or flight response, the adrenal gland releases hormones into the body, increasing the heart rate as well as the blood pressure. In many cases digestion stops eyesight is sharpened and muscles tense. Stress doesnâ⬠t only cause physical illness but also mental illness. Some symptoms are benign and common but such as fatigue and muscles however too much stress can bring on depression and even schizophrenia. According to Epstein moderate stress can help achieve self-concept. However heavy stress can rapidly unbalance self concept functions like threat to physical integrity and loss of self-esteem. He defined many of these functions as ââ¬Å"maintaining new experiential data and maintaining self esteem. If an imbalance occurs, the individual may become defensive in order to keep his self-concept enact, and varying degrees of pathological symptoms appearâ⬠. Many psychologists agree that defense mechanisms are ways of facing stress. A good defense mechanism that has been proven to work is humor and jokes. Another example of a defense mechanism is denial. Denial can either help or hurt you. For example if a women has breast cancer and she is in denial that she has this disease, she then can hurt herself by not going to the doctor and trying to solve the problem and try to treat it. However she can be in denial and not do something that can alter her well being permanently like taking her own life as a means of escape from the illness. There are many psychological disorders however the two most known and common are macro-stressors and micro stressors. A serious accident or a very stressful experience are very good examples of macro-stressors. Reactions to these stressors are so intense that it causes temporary chronic traumatic neurosis. A good example of micro-stressors is depression. These stressors may vary because of daily criticism, unrealistic goals, and sometimes lack of social communication. Both of these stressors bring on difficulties in breathing, frequent sighing, and a lot of the times emptiness in the stomach. In most cases these symptoms disappear with time however for some people this becomes into a chronic condition and it disturbs their every day life. They lose all interests in everyday activities, develop problems at work and live in a state of mind where they are afraid of their own self-confidence. To control stress Psychologist say that stress management is the only way to go. The reason for this is because managing stress through special techniques will reduce the stress that affects your health in a bad way. Self-management comes from a belief in internal rather then external controls of ones life. Many people think that their lives are directed by destiny. However this has never been proven. In my opinion and many psychologist opinion is that self determination of ones power to maintain or modify your behavior according to your goals will overcome any obstacles. A lot of what stress management consists of is in the body. Selye believed that adaptation energy is limited and the cause of most deaths related to stress. However we see in many cases that this isnâ⬠t true because we as humans know that being in good physical and mental condition helps us overcome daily difficulties and traumatic life events. Managing stress is a very important thing. However their is a limit on the right way to manage internal factors that act on stress is to take care of your body with the following. Exercising is the primary stress reducer that we are exposed too. Exercise is a very important factor in keeping physically fit. Exercising acts directly on hart efficiency, blood circulation in the lungs and in the vascular system. Exercising lets us digest better look better and feel better. Another important aspect to reducing stress is eating properly. A good diet gives the body the right amount of nourishment that it needs to survive. Eating the wrong foods stress the body because it lacks normal functioning and harms the bodyâ⬠s cells. Another very important and crucial aspect of stress reduction is relaxation and relaxation techniques. Never ending activities and daily worries are constant sources of tension. Because of this we need to relax. To relax many people often smoke cigarettes or even weed. Other use tranquilizers and drink liquor. In todayâ⬠s society we find out that these types of ââ¬Å"stress reducing agentsâ⬠are wrong and sometimes fatal. About 20-30% of Americans smoke and this increases the lung cancer risk by 700%. Smoking also brings on other dangerous problems with the liver kidneys and poor heart and blood circulation. Many relaxation methods more natural and safer than drugs should be used. The right methods reduce the psychological effects of tension. This helps to slow down adrenal secretions and allow the parasympathetic nervous system to work with ease. Physical conditioning was only introduced to us in the beginning of the 19th century when scientist found a correlation between health and fitness. Exercises help people consentrate, improve sleep and get rid of aggression that gives us stress. Exercising also gives us a feeling of personal control and provides us with greater bodily awareness. Physiologists say that sports act as medicine for relieving most stressful situations. It takes your mind away from pain and lets you relieve it. When people exercise it also gives them more energy to do other things because you get tired less quickly. All of this is a very beneficial stress reducing agent. However if you donâ⬠t exercise you can increase your risks of obesity, bad digestive functioning, back pain, and other problems of the body. For our bodyâ⬠s to function well we need a good diet. A good diet consists of carbohydrates, fats, protein, minerals and water. To have all of these aspects you need a balanced diet. There has been a lot of evidence that having a poor diet increases stress levels. When a person doesnâ⬠t eat right that stresses the body by preventing normal metabolism. To reduce stress you have to eat the right food. If you have low calcium levels you should start eating more dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurts. Many dieticians prefer eating whole grain products because they contain alimentary fibers needed for digestion. Fruits and vegetables are another source of healthy foods. They provide us with vitamins we need for living. You should reduce the fat content by about thirty percent because the more fat you eat the more stress you are putting on the functioning organs in your body like the heart. There are many relaxation techniques that you can do. Some have to do with playing a sport or some you can do while doing nothing at home. The most important and the most affective relaxation techniques have to do with ones control over mind and body. Meditation is one thing you can do that helps to achieve a stress free environment. Meditation has to do with centering your attention on one thing. The two main goals that are tried to reach during meditation are states of a deep relaxation and a mental state of awakening and alertness. These alterations apply to companies utilizing International Financial Reporting Standards ( IFRS ) , and are besides relevant for those presently utilizing UK GAAP. ( PWC, 2013 ) Most UK companies will see a higher reported pension disbursal in the net income and loss ( P A ; L ) statement as a consequence of these alterations. Companies will no longer be able to take recognition for likely investing out-performance of equities above corporate bonds. There will be greater balance sheet volatility for the minority of companies that presently apply the option to postpone actuarial additions and losingss, known as the corridor approach.A ( PWC, 2013 ) The Company participates in the Tesco PLC Pension Scheme which is a multi-employer strategy within the Tesco Group. The alterations in IFRS are implemented from the periods get downing on or after 1 January 2013. In pattern it will take the corridor attack and all the actuarial addition and losingss will necessitate immediate acknowledgment in the other comprehensive income. The involvement cost and the expected return on assets elements of the P A ; L pension disbursal computation will be combined in future. The impact will depend on the future place of the pension strategy and future actuarial premises, but the alterations are non expected to hold a material consequence on the Group s reported net incomes or equity. IAS 17 Leases The chief proposed alteration that is under consideration by International Accounting Standard Board ( IASB ) is that rentals would be recorded on the balance sheet and besides discourse the categorization and form of disbursals in the income statement. For illustration, the operating rental Entire rental collectible Entire lease receivable 2012 ( ?m ) 2011 ( ?m ) 2012 ( ?m ) 2011 ( ?m ) 17,323 16,015 936 1,129 Showing these sums in the balance can hold significant impact on how a stockholder looks at the balance sheet. Decision Tesco plays an of import function in the modern British society by supplying all the twenty-four hours to twenty-four hours necessities to the local people and is regarded as the one of the biggest nutrient retail merchant in U.K. This essay examined Tesco s cardinal accounting policies in relation to non-current assets and discussed how some of them are recognised and measured for book-keeping intents. Besides the non-currents assets which accounts a large portion of Tesco group is non merely a important sum in the balance sheet but in add-on represent the company as whole. It besides discussed the function of direction in finding the estimations and judgements while fixing the fiscal statements. Any alteration in the premise can hold rather a major impact on net incomes. For illustration if company decided to compose off good will and rate being used at the minute is 10 % and the company decided to alter it to 15 % . That alteration can take to impact the net incomes in the P A ; L history and so farther the balance sheet. In the last portion of the essay it has been discussed the proposed alterations in International Financial Reporting Standards and how they will impact Tesco once they are put into pattern. Some regulations like IAS 19 which will non hold that greater affect on Tesco histories because Tesco does nt utilize corridor attack in their accounting and on another manus IAS 17 will demo huge alterations on balance sheets. Dysphoria is the opposite of euphoria. Whereas euphoria is a feeling of well-being, dysphoria is a state marked by feeling of unease or discomfort. Perhaps the most familiar type of dysphoria comes from pangs of conscience: the bad feeling in the pit of oneââ¬â¢s stomach that results from having done something unkind or dishonest. Embarrassment is another kind of dysphoria, as is the sense of let-down that follows the euphoria felt by drug addicts and thrill seekers when the source of pleasure is withdrawn. Some psychologists have adopted the term ââ¬Å"gender dysphoriaâ⬠in place of ââ¬Å"gender identity disorder (GID)â⬠to describe the feelings of people who experience a sense that thereââ¬â¢s a mismatch between their bodies and their genders. English contains dozens of words that begin with dys-. The prefix denotes the meaning of bad or difficult. Most dys- words are scientific terms, many of them dealing with pathologies. A few have entered the common general vocabulary. Here are the most commonly heard dys- words: dysentery (noun): an often epidemic or endemic disease characterized by severe diarrhea. dysfunctional (adjective): impaired, not functioning as it should. dyslexia (noun): a learning disability characterized by varying difficulties in processing written language. dyspepsia (noun): severe indigestion. Figuratively, dyspepsia, together with its adjective form dyspeptic, refers to ill humor. For example, ââ¬Å"Then it would be dismissed as a non-issue despite the fact that invariably the dyspetic editors of The Daily Mail would turn out to be proven correct!â⬠dysplasia (noun): an abnormal growth or development. In dogs,à hip dysplasiaà is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of theà of the joints. dystopian (adjective): oppressive and miserable. The word dystopia is the opposite of utopia, a word coined to represent an ideal human society. Motion pictures that show a future in which people are oppressed by an intrusive government are said to present ââ¬Å"a dystopian vision of the future.â⬠dystrophy (noun): a wasting away of the body. Muscular dystrophy is a disorder characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of skeletal muscles. Here are some less common dys- words that a few writers may find useful: dysgenic (adjective): exerting a detrimental effect on the race, tending towards racial degeneration. dyskinesia (noun): impaired motion. dysmenorrhea (noun): painful menstruation. dysphagia (noun): difficulty in swallowing. dysphonia (noun): impairment of the voice. dysrhythmia (noun): disordered rhythm in the brain waves. These novels address various topics including civil war, social conflicts, and cultural displacement among other topics. Subject to addressing controversial topics, William Faulkners Literary Canon faces many critics. Indeed, many critics and readers could not understand William Faulkners Literary Canon in his entire life. However, in the modern literature, many critics and readers recognize William as a prominent author in American literary history. William Faulkner was a modernist writer who explored the themes of isolation and cultural displacement that prevailed in America in the 1920s and 30s. Although the literary critics and public have in time appreciated the significance of William Faulkners works and their audacity in terms of both form and content, very few literary critics have managed to analyze Faulknerââ¬â¢s literary production in terms of working-class aspects that are prominent in his works (Bucaria 1). In addressing his most prominent works that include the Hamlet (1940), the Town (1957), and the Mansion (1959), we can establish that William Faulkners Literary Canon depicts the use of a tragic tone (Educational Broadcasting Corporation 1). Indeed, it is clear that William Faulkners Literary Canon manifests a mixture of tragedy and comedy. William inherited the use of comic sense in writing as used by earlier writers. Notably, the three novels noted above define the tragicomic chronicle of the Snopes Trilogy that establishes the effect of the Snopes Trilogy on Yoknapatawpha County (Educational Broadcasting Corporation 1). These works faced numerous criticisms. Indeed, upon his death, the New York Times asserted, "Mr. Faulkners writings showed an obsession Kenneth Cannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07105400736814905796noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593123773209657960.post-33434321878013514612020-02-01T17:36:00.001-08:002020-02-01T17:36:03.215-08:00The protection of biodiversity involves a multi-pronged approach in EssayThe protection of biodiversity involves a multi-pronged approach in response to numerous threats, challenges and pressures. Desc - Essay Example Canada has identified several endangered species from its rich diversity. These species include the polar bear, the spotted owl, boreal woodland caribou, pearly caribou and the kidney shell. These are just some of the species that are listed as endangered and many Canadian environmentalists argue that there are many more. These species face many threats ranging from climatic changes to human induced activities. The population of the polar bear for instance is on a declining trend because of climatic changes and increased hunting and persecution by man in Canada. Similar threats face other endangered species and to reverse the situation, the Canadian government has enforced multi-prong approaches to preserve and conserve the species. The first approach is listing and identification of the endangered species, recovery strategies, action planning, and protection of their habitats in addition to indentifying safety nets for protection. Two agencies namely Committee on the Status of the E ndangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and federal government through SARA (Species at Risk Act) are responsible for listing and indentifying the endangered species. This is followed by identifying the habitat of the endangered species with an objective of preserving it from being lost. Venter, et al (2006) indentified habitat loss as the main factor that has contributed to decline of species in the country. I found out the happy news just before leaving work. Excitedly I jumped into my car and started my journey home. As I drove home down I-95 through all of the usual evening traffic I just kept thinking about ho I was going to tell my husband we were going to Italy. That night I continuously paced the floor looking out of my bedroom window to see if my husband was home from work yet. As he drove up in our driveway I ran outside to tell him the good news. I said, ââ¬Å"Nick guess where we are going in March?â⬠Before he could even say where I yelled out ââ¬Å"Italyâ⬠! Italy, he said with a puzzled look on his face. I then explained the situation with work and said to him since if I have the opportunity to go I thought it would be a great idea for you to come along with me. I suggested scheduled some time before the show for the two of us to travel around Rome. Later that night it was sett led we would schedule a couple of days to tour Rome before the exhibition. It seemed like forever before we would finally be on our way, but then before I knew it we were on the airplane and the flight attendant is announcing fasten your seatbelts and prepare for landing into Leonardo da Vinci airport. à à à à à After arriving at the airport we had to transfer to a train that would take us to the city center. It was about a 30-minute train ride. Along the ride I was getting my first look at Rome, mostly the colorful countryside with the rows of sunflowers that were so splendid with bright yellow centers, and green leaves that were so full of life. Just pass the beautiful field of sunflowers was a small farmhouse made of stone. You could see the smoke coming out of the chimney and the farmers working their land. Upon arriving at the main train station, ââ¬Å"Stazione Terminiâ⬠in Italian, the excitement was building I couldnââ¬â¢t wait another minute to see all the sites of Rome. The Colosseum, The Roman Forum, and the Vatican were tops on my list, and with only a couple of days to site see there wasnââ¬â¢t any time to waste. Introduction: Much of Lu Hsunââ¬â¢s stories are recollections of his past struggles. He admits this in the preface of his collection of works entitled, Call to Arms. But as this collection was viewed by Lu Hsun himself as a way to encourage young dreamers to pursue their aspirations and spare themselves of the agony of his youth, much of it becomes a mirror as well of the Chinese culture and history. Hence, Lu Hsun is not only a chief commander of Chinaââ¬â¢s modern Cultural Revolution; he is also the founder of modern Chinese literature. This paper aims to make a modest critical analysis of Lu Hsunââ¬â¢s work using his first three short stories namely; A Madmanââ¬â¢s Diary, The True Story of Ah Q and The New Years Sacrifice. These are chosen to identify patterns of themes, subjects and beliefs that are embodied in his writings. Also, we hope to be able to understand Chinese traditions and heritage using the same short stories. In the end we may find literature as a strong method of making a noble contribution to the world with its inherent power to opine, philosophize and influence. Let us begin with a brief telling of the storiesââ¬â¢ plots and details. After which we enumerate the significance of each and lastly to provide a general assessment of the storyââ¬â¢s lessons and socio-cultural and political implications. This last part of the analysis is relevant as we have had hints already of the intentions of the author to provide an empowerment to the readers for the attainment of certain goals. The paper will end in such a way that Lu Hsun is commended for his creativity in the craft to have shown consistency of his agenda as manifested in his literary machinery ââ¬â ergo, becomes successful and compatible endeavors of revolutionary and literary toils. II. A Madmanââ¬â¢s Diary The first story is a narration of Lu Hsunââ¬â¢s reading of a diary of his old friend. The latter referred to as the madman, through his personal accounts have expressed the nature of his illness. He sees his own brother, relatives, neighbors and doctor as man-eaters. The content of the diary may seem weird and dreadful yet the author of the diary charged of insanity has managed to think and speak of historical accounts to prove his case. For instance, he called a previous enemy, Ku Chiu which in translation means ââ¬Å"Ancient Timesâ⬠; his doctor, Li Shih-chen who in history was a famous pharmacologist and authored the Materia Medica. Both usage have latent meanings and will be explained later. The madman also has knowledge of several traditional myths like his mention of Yi Ya, who according to ancient records cooked his son as present to Duke Huan who was ruler since 685 to 643 B.C. of Chi; he mentioned also Chieh and Chou who were known tyrants in history; Hsu His Lin who during the end of Ching dynasty was a revolutionary executed in 1907 whose heart and liver were believed to have been eaten because of his assassination of a Ching official. Again, these historical descriptions have significance in the goal of the author of Madmanââ¬â¢s Diary. The context of the story may seem to its audience a basic case of mental illness but this is true unless proper decoding is employed. The story suggests that there is a past experience which the madman has underwent which we could think of as the cause of his psychosis. According to the author, the madman has suffered from persecution. The sentiment of the main character at the time he was sick already against other people characterizes the same feelings he felt against them before this condition. Man-eating in the story symbolizes the feudal system in China. The oppression that the tenants suffer from their land lords has caused the madman to perhaps hate the former. The man-eaters in the story as observed by the madman consist of his neighbors, brother, doctor, etc.; basically all those who are of the land-owning class. The conspirators making themselves man-eaters as well include his own mother- this is due to the latterââ¬â¢s inability to reprimand his brother. To the madmanââ¬â¢s mind, those who support and those who are silenced by the oppression are alike. This is why he refers to them as man-eaters as well ââ¬â they all look at him in the same way like fierce animals ready to eat him and his flesh. Everyday, the madman has to deal with the same looks and reactions. He thought he was doing a good job of having been able to decipher their true intentions of killing and eating him. In the end however it pained him to have known that his sister could have died in the same experience of being eaten by other people. It pained him that his own family has not done anything while his motherââ¬â¢s weeping did not change the fact of her daughterââ¬â¢s tragic death. The seemingly unjust treatment of the community against a madman like him is translated into the majorityââ¬â¢s incapacity and lack of buoyancy to uphold a revolution such as that which would overhaul feudalism and promote equality. Yet, the madman has seen that Mr Chao for instance did not look solely at him with anger but with fear as well. One is afraid to change the status quo where he/she is already benefiting. Just like Mr Ku Chiu who was displeased with his intervention on his account sheets twenty years ago. Ku Chiu meaning Ancient Times symbolizes the long history of feudal oppression in China. The madman might have made wild statements in his diary but to a madman this signifies discontent, confusion, mixed emotions of fear and pain, none of which is equivalent to happiness and peace. He said he has not seen the moon for over thirty years. He must have been imprisoned or isolated that long from the community, the people barely recognize him just like the dog which looked at him twice. In the new day or perhaps new circumstance he is into, he only remembers the feelings of annoyance against them. Yet he witnessed the children, lively as they may appear but the madman, reluctant about their purity thought they also had eyes that misinterpret him. When he said their parents could have told them about his story, he was referring to the possible transfer of the tradition of tyranny to the new generation and the hindrance to their quest for truth, justice and equality. The madman abhors the fact that the own victims of this cruelty have not done anything to antagonize but why do they look at him like that? This is expressed in the part below: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Those people, some of whom have been pilloried by the magistrate, slapped in the face by the local gentry, had their wives taken away by bailiffs, or their parents driven to suicide by creditors, never looked as frightened and as fierce then as they did yesterdayâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Lu Hsun, A Madmanââ¬â¢s Diary, April, 1918) He sees their laughers, discussions of him, teeth and speech as comprising their secret signs. There are statements in the story which the author has provided for us to understand further the nature of the norm in their history. Like when the madman remembers the time when he would be commended by his brother for his indifference vis a vis wrong doings: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I remember when my elder brother taught me to write compositions, no matter how good a man was, if I produced arguments to the contrary he would mark that passage to show his approval; while if I excused evil-doers, he would say: ââ¬Å"Good for you, that shows originalityâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ At that time , it would have been better if you are blind and deaf and perhaps insane to resist the subjugation. This is also presented in the part where Mr. Ho, the doctor tells the madman: ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t let your imagination run away with you! Rest quietly for a few days and you will be alrightâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The madman sees this statement as a warning for his deed of courage and integrity. ââ¬â to be brave and righteous yield death of a man. Toward the end of the story, the madman asked a twenty year old lad if it was right to eat human beings and if such was an accepted act simply because it has always been like that. The author here is arriving at an assumption that a tradition of cruelty could have been regarded by most of them as justifiable by its permanence and embedded nature. But a challenge has been set forth in the end; that is to become a real man. For the madman, real men donââ¬â¢t eat human beings. Although as claimed, primitive people have done so, he advised his brother that to remain like them is the same as reptiles and animals who eat flesh and must be ashamed of themselves. This is a way for the author to propose that to desist tradition (the four thousand years of eating flesh) is to put a halt to oppression ââ¬â this is the act of a real man. He calls on a change of spirit and ideas so he tells them in the story; ââ¬Å"You should change at once, change from the bottom of your hearts! You must know that in future there will be no place for man-eaters in the world . . . .â⬠His final words are equally challenging and meaningful. It was a call for change especially for the youth ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Perhaps there are still children who have not eaten men? Save the children. . .â⬠III. The True Story of Ah Q The second story is written in December, 1921. Ah Q is a worker in the Weichuang village who has become a laughing stock and destination of insult from amongst his fellow villagers. His death was a tragic one considering that while his origin has not been known to the author or to the village people in the story, the cause of his execution is also neither defined by him nor his fellowmen. It is in this cycle confusions and uncertainties that the story becomes a revelation of the situation of China during the early nineteenth century. Lu Hsun has used characters in the story with meaningful roles in Chinaââ¬â¢s history. Mr. Chao and Mr. Chien are both influential and wealthy people in the village whose sons have given them pride by passing the examination and having been posted to high positions in the society; Whiskers Wang and Young D who are servants like Ah Q had different perspectives and never united; The Imitation Foreign Devil who studied in Japan and has returned to the village without any meaningful contribution; the nun whom Ah Q have maltreated for his perceived false modesty of her; the townspeople; the military captain; the successful provincial candidate; the old man with a clean shaven head ââ¬â they all did not spare Ah Q a little. It appeared that Ah Q was fond of drinking wine, sleeping after a dayââ¬â¢s job at the Tutelary Godââ¬â¢s Temple and imagining his own definition of victories. For Ah Q being beaten by a son is a victory; and every time he is teased by the village folks for his scar that looked like ringworm on his head and crushed to the wall for his eccentricities, he considers them losers ââ¬â for they are his sons. This weird claim of Ah Q has made the people a lot more irritated of him. To him his only two defeats were namely; his defeat by Whiskers Wang who he regard as his equal; and by the Imitation Foreign Devil. He found dignity in humiliating a small nun. When he lost his job due to an incident with a maidservant at the Chao family house, he headed to the other town where a stroke of luck provided him with goods enough to be sold and become a source of his new profit. Yet along with his return to the village and his renewed sense of respect for himself when the people started to talk about him and his fortune, a revolution occurred. Without much clarity, he was caught as suspect to a robbery by the revolutionaries at the Chao family. He told the captors that he might have approved of the revolution but he was not allowed to join because the Imitation Foreign Devil prohibited him. Uneducated, Ah Q was made to draw a circle as signature in a paper whose content was unknown to him and later that day, he was set as an example to the people and all other revolutionaries for death execution. One must have knowledge of Chinaââ¬â¢s history to be able to appreciate further Ah Qââ¬â¢s story. The Qing dynasty with its long-lived rule and enormous failures has caused a deterioration of performance along traditional lines. The arrival of foreigners who were driven by the industrial revolution of the West had caused much indignation and loss of resources for the prideful denizens of China. With their superior weaponry and cultural superiority might have brought Chinaââ¬â¢s independence they have nonetheless encountered opposition. This foreign presence has resulted to changed political demands among the revolutionaries. The Taiping Uprising for instance considered as the longest peasant rebellion denounced Confucianism and found new aspirations in Christianity. The dynasty resorted to the Chinese provincial armies to suppress the Taipings. A lot has changed since the abolition of the civil service examination in China based on the Confucian classics. There has been a program of sending students to Japan for modern studies that brought radical ideas convinced of overthrowing the dynasty and revolutionizing China. This success of reformation however by Sun Yat Sen has not abandoned feudalism, and has worsened due to Chinaââ¬â¢s dependency in the new market economy and international trade, the condition of the peasants who were displaced and deprived. Warlordism and the lack of nationalism have deepened the problem of China until the success of the CCP in the 1940s. These events took place prior and perhaps during the writing of Lu Hsunââ¬â¢s Ah Q. Clearly, Ah Q represents the peasant revolution which has been isolated from the intellectualsââ¬â¢ endeavor. When Ah Q was denied participation by the Imitation Foreign Devil, the author has implied here that those who have attained education in Japan in the nineteenth century have not fulfilled the true essence of a revolution. They failed to establish unity among its people as superiority among the land owning class prevails. Thus, Ah Q might have wanted to revolt for as he claimed in the story, ââ¬Å"revolution is goodâ⬠, but it was late for him to prove his strength and capacity. He was executed in a crime he has not committed.à His lack of knowledge failed him to understand the situation ââ¬â this is more painful for him. Alfred Hitchcock movie review Alfred Hitchcock was a brilliant technician who blended sex, suspense and humor. Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades. He remains one of the most popular and most recognized filmmakers, and his works are still popular today. Hitchcock was able to master not only the art of the film making but also the art of the psychological thriller. Hitchcock trademark techniques that made his film classics today include ââ¬Å"Emotionâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The Camera is not a Cameraâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Dialogue is not everythingâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Suspense is Informationâ⬠. Four of his recognizable films; Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, Vertigo and North by Northwest demonstrates the techniques of a typical Hitchcock film. EMOTION Hitchcock believed that emotion that comes from the eyes of the actors, he used close up shots of actorââ¬â¢s eyes which intensified the emotion, the farther away the less intense. By usin g this technique heââ¬â¢s not only able to show the actors feelings but also control the audiencesââ¬â¢. In the movie Vertigo we see Hitchcockââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Emotionâ⬠technique as Scott runs after Judy into the church towers, audiences sees his fear as he chases after Judy, another of Hitchcockââ¬â¢s technique that he used to intensify the situation was by the spiraling of the stairs, the stairs becomes farther and farther as Scott continues chasing after Judy giving audiences a sense of danger. The camera zooms in for a close up of Scottââ¬â¢s face as we see a mixed of anger and disbelief after witnessing a suicide. Vertigo demonstrated Hitchcockââ¬â¢s emotion technique through Scottââ¬â¢s fear of heights and his theory of proximity. THE CAMERA IS NOT A CAMERA Another one of Hitchcockââ¬â¢s famous trademark techniques is ââ¬Å"The camera is not a cameraâ⬠, for this technique Hitchcock uses the camera and gives it human qualities like allowing it to roam and lets it go freely. By doing this Hitchcock lets audiences experience the story. In the beginning of the movie Rear Window, the camera is always at a constant pace with James. During the whole time all the audiences get are point of view shots of James looking out the window and around the room giving the audience a little more understanding of the story. Hitchcock establishes not only James personality but also the plot and what may happen in the future. One of Hitchcockââ¬â¢s more stylish thriller, an man bound to a wheelchair spotting a possible murder, be ready to get frightened. DIALOGUE IS NOT EVERYTHING Another technique Hitchcock uses to draw the audience further into the minds of the characters is called ââ¬Å"Dialogue is not everythingâ⬠This type of technique allows Hitchcock to give the audience a sense of relation with a character by either having the actor always being pre-occupied with something during a scene or having them constantly distr acted. In North by Northwest audience see this specific type of element when Thornhill spies on Phillip and Leonard at Phillipââ¬â¢s retreat, after finding out that Eve might be in danger, he quickly writes a note on a matchbox and throws it down where Eve was sitting. Audience can easily tell Eve is a professional spy as she is able to decipher the note and uses an excuse to meet up with Thornhill. Hitchcock uses this technique to not only draw the audienceââ¬â¢s attention but teases them with the thought of wanting more. North by Northwest, a funny and yet thriller, including many memorable scenes like Mount Rushmore. SUSPENCE IS INFORMATION Hitchcock known as the master of suspense was not only excellent at playing the minds of the audience but also keeps them second guessing on the outcomes. Information is essential to Hitchcockââ¬â¢s films and tends to show the audience what the actors donââ¬â¢t see. An example of the suspense is in the movie Dial M for Murder in the ending when Tony unaware of the detective sneaking into his apartment and is waiting for him to find the key under the stairwell. The audience knows that most likely Tony is going to remember the key in which he planted under the stairs, but instead of heading for the key right away Tony wanders around figuring where he could have left his key. Hitchcock uses this technique to prolong and to keep the suspense. A suspenseful film from beginning to end, with the hard headed detective and an eager husband battling it out. It will keep you guessing till the end. Emotion, the camera is not a camera, dialogue is not everything and suspense is information all contribute to Hitchcockââ¬â¢s stylistic filming techniques. The warnings contain certain privilege to protect individual from self incrimination. Officers usually tell suspects the following statements: ââ¬Å"You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have him present with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you, if you wishâ⬠. The purpose of Miranda is to stabilize the suspectââ¬â¢s psychological condition and make him reasonable when dealing with police. Usually police are required to give Miranda warnings to a suspect who is the focus of an investigation where he will be taken into custody and interrogated. Custody is a formal arrest that places a suspect in an intimidating environment and his freedom is restricted. The location where the suspect is questioned is an important factor for Miranda warnings since not all places are hostile or coercive. Some events that justify custody include questioning suspects at the police station (brought in handcuffed), in a police vehicle (locked up in the back seat with a screen), at the crime scene (when an officer is about to make an arrest), or even at his home (awakened in the wee hours of the morning or handcuffed). Furthermore, a home can be deemed custodial if police aggressively barged in to get or question the suspect. When subjected to interrogation, a suspect is given the Miranda warning since the nature of questioning is persuasive to obtain a confession or admission. There are two types of interrogations covered by Miranda: questions that can elicit an incriminating response like ââ¬Å"Why did you kill him?â⬠and direct questioning such as asking a suspect to write down what happened. As a general rule, however, if the suspect invokes his Miranda rights, all questioning must stop. Overall, Miranda warnings are required every time there is custodial interrogation. She has always been in my corner and by my side. She has taught me that if I want something in life I must work hard to achieve it because no one is giving anything in this life. I can recall a time when I was growing up where she was working two jobs because her and my father had split up and having seven kids to feed. One job just wouldnââ¬â¢t do. My mother refused to get on Public Assistance because she said they would be constantly probing her life so she did not need that kind of headache. She would go to work early then come home very late my grandmother would be there with us, watching us until we were old enough to watch ourselves. But the only thing that I remember was that no matter what we needed my grandmother was always there for us ââ¬â like a back up mother. The portfolio therefore, mainly aims at establishing these factors, which have contributed to the success of the Ray-Ban sunglasses worldwide. In the portfolio, there is different information, and findings about Ray-Ban, including its other products, challenges, and its marketing strategies. First, it was important to understand and be familiar with the Ray-Ban Company and its history, before delving deep into its business operations. It is established that Ray-Ban brand stepped in the market in 1937, with Bausch & Lomb, an American company, as its founder. Although sunglasses in this era were meant for pilots, this company started manufacturing sunglasses and other fashionable products, for ordinary people. Later, Ray-Ban became popular for the Aviator and Wayfarer sunglasses, which came in various colours and lenses, for both p ilots and ordinary people (ââ¬Å"Timeless fashionâ⬠2012) Ray-Ban sunglasses are stylish and fashionable, but quite expensive, yet still manage to acquire a large global market (ââ¬Å"Ray-Banâ⬠2013). ... However, the company has dealt with this by informing its customers of the unique features of its sunglasses, such as the lenses, frames and hinges, and the company logo on the sunglasses, which make it easy to differentiate between the real and fake Ray-Ban sunglasses (ââ¬Å"Aticle Alleyâ⬠2011). This is the main information in the portfolio, which has helped demystify the success of Ray-Ban brand. This whole exercise of researching Ray-Ban has been a fulfilling one. To a greater extent, it has been like a learning process in the field of business. On the other hand, personal fulfilment came about in terms of making some discoveries about a concept that I had no idea about. For instance, I could have been wondering why Ray-Ban is so popular, but had never taken the initiative of finding out the phenomenon by myself. Therefore, this process has made me learn about the Ray-Ban company in detail, something I could have not achieved were it not for this project. Through this resea rch, I have achieved considerable academic knowledge. First, I have gained more knowledge in the field of journalism. Journalism is all about researching and finding out the truth and facts about aspects that had never been addressed before (Hartin 2004). This is exactly what I did on my personal level, as I had not attempted to research about Ray-Ban before. In the field of business, this project has imparted in me business knowledge. Basing on facts about Ray-Ban, I have learnt the strategies a company can use to ensure a successful and popular brand. In the case of Ray-Ban, this is putting the needs of customers first, to ensure customer satisfaction (Evans & Berman 2003). Strategic marketing plans are crucial part of promoting products and services of an organization. ââ¬Å"Organizations must change because their environments changeâ⬠(Bateman, 1990). They implement necessary changes in the organization to not only survive but compete with their rival with confidence. Changing environment of technological advancement has made it imperative for one to evolve new marketing strategy in order to maintain an edge over their rivals. The compulsions of the rapidly transforming societal paradigms and technological advancements are important factors that require more comprehensive and innovative approach to market strategy. The company needs to formulate marketing and communication strategy in a way that would not only uphold a high standard of corporate ethics but it must be able to ensure and exhibit understanding of the cross cultural values and handle issues with sensitivity. Any strategy that is formed needs to be localized to suit the local conditions. The coordination of the characters contributed to the central message in the play. This relies on numerous features key among which is the charactersââ¬â¢ costumes. Written in the late 1500s the costumes must help place the play in the particular society. Setting is vital in enhancing the message in the play since it validates the claims of the author. Specific themes are appropriate in particular settings. Among themes Shakespeare addresses in the play is witchcraft. The subject remains underexplored in the contemporary society in which scientific inventions continue to make life easier. Placing the play in the early English society thus validates the theme since witchcraft and magic was rampant at the time. Costumes therefore play the integral role of placing the action in the play in specific society. The characters must dress specific costumes that portray the prevailing styles at the time. The costumes of the characters readily place the play to a specific time in history a feature that validates the authorââ¬â¢s claims. The characters dress unique clothes that do not only portray their varied roles in the play but also uniformly place them in a specific period in the history of the country, a key feature that validates the plot of the play (Garber 41). The unique attire places the play in the early Scottish culture. Additionally, costumes helps identity the characters. Each of the numerous characters in the play dress differently and in accordance to their roles. The first scene for example opens up with two witches meeting Macbeth. The costumes readily distinguish the witches from Macbeth and the trend continues in all the succeeding scenes in the play. Costumes also help set the various characters apart thereby Kenneth Cannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07105400736814905796noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3593123773209657960.post-36223672493625189752019-11-16T04:19:00.001-08:002019-11-16T04:19:05.284-08:00Analysis Of Standardization Verses AdaptationAnalysis Of Standardization Verses Adaptation Globalization seems to have become the phenomenon that no one can escape form whether its a small business or a big one. It even seems to have huge effect on our life style. Schaeffer 2003. As defined by Wild et al. (2005, p.6) globalization is the trend toward greater economic, cultural, political, and technological interdependence among national institutions and economies. This reflects that globalization is a phenomenon that encompasses not only businesses but also other factors making up the society Daniels et al. 2007; Hill 2007. The modern economic landscape has globalization as one of its prominent feature Anthony Pecotich and Steven Ward 2007. It is proposed that in coming time it will be the foreign markets that will play the main role for growth of most of the firms Douglas B. Holt, John A. Quelch, and Earl L. Taylor 2004. And this phenomenon, that seems to have great impact on us all, makes the bases for new market systems (Craig and Douglas 1996; Ghauri and Cateora 2006). This system makes markets so interdependent that the performance of firm is evaluated on a global rather than national base. (Porter 1986; Ulrike de Brentani, Elko J. Kleinschmidt, and Soà ¨ ren Salomo 2010) .Globalization brings with it several decisions to be made, one of which is the standardization or adaptation of various aspects of marketing mix (Chung 2003; Walters 1986; ÃÆ'-zsomer et al. 1991). A firm when entering a new market can make the choice of either modifying the product referred to as adaptation or making no change in the product referred to as standardization (Roger J. Calantone, S. Tamer Cavusgil, Jeffrey B. Schmidt, and Geon-Cheol Shin 2004). A strong disagreement exists between the scholars favoring standardization in contrast to those esteeming adaptation. (Theodosiou and Leonidou 2003; Ryans et al. 2003) Literature Review: The debate over supremacy of adaptation versus standardization runs back for more than half a century with Elinder (1961) and Roostal (1963) being pioneer contributors, with their main focus on corporate advertising functions, with the notion of standardization in advertisement which was based on the argument that marketing principles largely remain the same ubiquitously. International marketing was first discussed from a wider viewpoint by Bartels (1968) who argued in favor of standardization strategy. Buzzell (1968) spoke of standardization as the standardization of the 4Ps of marketing mix, namely product, price, place and promotion, across borders. Levitt (1983) proposed this standardization of product worldwide to be one of a key success factor for firms when going global. On the other hand researchers also claim that standardization is an oversimplification which is not effectively operative and true for marketing concepts ( Douglas and Craig 1986; Douglas and Wind 1987). These and many other researches bought into limelight the scholarly debate over supremacy of standardization verses adaptation, which is still on-going (Cavusgil et al. 1993; Johnson and Arunthanes 1995; Lages 2000; Shoham 1999; Theodosiou and Katsikeas 2001). The theory of economies of scale is considered to be of fundamental importance to the advocates of standardization, as it is argued that standardization brings with it economies of scale and this result in reduction of cost and maximization of profits. (Porter 1985; Porter 1980; Ryans et al. 2003; Shoham and Albaum 1994). Economy of scale is also claimed to be one of the most probable outcomes of standardization (Buzzell 1968; Douglas and Craig 1986; Levitt 1983; Theodosiou and Leonidou 2003; Yip 1995; ÃÆ'-zsomer and Simonin 2004) The advocates of adaptation, on the other hand, question the impact of economies of scale. As Douglas and Wind (1987) claim that distribution cost is more important than production cost. Strong arguments questioning economies of scales influence on promotion have also been evidenced (Douglas and Craig 1986; Onkvisit and Shaw 1987). Theodosiou and Leonidou ( 2003) take the discussion further by proposing that the central motive of organizations is long-term profits which could be achieved through adaptation rather than standardization. Further arguing that as low price customers are habitually not brand loyal (Keller 2003; Wind 1986) this raises a big question mark for the firms espousing standardization in the long run (Douglas and Wind 1987; Wind 1986). Similarly another argument in favor of standardization is the intensification in homogenized needs of global customers resulting in an increasing number of similar market segments across countries. This increased in globalization of customers is believed to be made possible by the development of transportation technologies (Levitt 1983). It is argued that the technological advancement results in augmented customer mobility producing global customers with homogenous needs (Cavusgil et al. 2008; Douglas and Wind 1987; Keegan et al. 1987; Theodosiou and Katsikeas 2001). These global customers are even prepared to sacrifice other features of product in order to acquire standardized product of high quality and low price (Levitt 1983). And this trend of customers choice is claimed to be the reason for many products to have universal specifications (Cavusgil et al. 2008). The companies going for standardization influence their suppliers to offer standardized products and this reflect why bu siness to business organizations have to go for standardization (Buzzell 1968; Douglas and Wind 1987; Yip 1989). Similarly Ohmae (1985) discusses the Triad in order to elaborate homogenization of customers. Triad, which encompasses the European Union, United States and Japan, seems to be filled with customers having large number of correspondences in their psychographic and demographic characteristics and this group of customers is open to globally vigorous companies (Ohmae 1985; Theodosiou and Katsikeas 2001). Because of the increasing number of these internationally savvy consumers with similar needs in terms of product and service features, several global customer segments ,based on behavior rather than religious or political margins, are proposed, by researchers, to be pleased with standardized offerings (Armstrong and Kotler 2007; Cavusgil et al. 2008; Hassan et al. 2003; Hassan and Craft 2005). Whereas Wiechmann and Pringle (1979) claim that there is always friction between home and host markets, this friction could be between the company and its foreign distributor or foreign customer and / or even between home country and host country offices. This friction is result of different environmental discrepancies between the two markets. It is suggested that adaption can help minimize this friction resulting in better performance (Shoham 2002; Shoham and Albaum 1994). Another frequently mentioned justification to why international companies should adopt standardization is the technological advancement in communications and information (Buzzell 1968; Jain 1989; Terpstra and Sarathy 2000; Zou and Cavusgil 2002). There are several channels on television available to customers globally via cable and satellites (Elinder 1965; Jobber 2007). In addition to this, international availability of English language print media can be traced back to decades (Terpstra and Sarathy 2000). likewise internet has also developed into a vibrant marketing device worldwide (Chaffey et al. 2006; Mohammed et al. 2003). All this presents a global market for standardized advertisement. And it backs Levitts (1983) claim that people would want things promoted on these new technologies. These marketing tools enable and direct the use of standardized marketing strategies (Theodosiou and Leonidou 2003; Zou and Cavusgil 2002). However, it is also argued that new technology brings w ith it more flexibility which favor adaptation and a firm can use this to have advantage over its competitors (Douglas and Craig 1986; Douglas and Wind 1987; Shoham 1999). Fairly allied with the homogenization of customers and market segments, mentioned earlier, is the proliferation in regional economic amalgamation, taking place globally. The past few years have seen an extraordinary spread of regional trade arrangements. With the most noticeable regional economic amalgamations, till date, to be the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and European Union (EU). It is argued that standardized strategies are most likely to be successful in these areas (Cavusgil et al. 2008; Hill 2007; Theodosiou and Katsikeas 2001; Wild et al. 2005). As these agreements aim to remove trade barriers this intern facilitate internationalization of firms which brings with itself globalization of customers in these integrated regions (Hill 2007; Wild et al. 2005). Where on one had we find claims in favor of standardization On the other hand Friedman (2000) debates that standardization may work for limited number of product. Adding on to this claim are Douglas and Craig (1986) litigating that there is no evidence available to support the standardization view. Many scholars have debated that there exists a fairly large difference between the foreign markets and for this reason the marketing strategies should be adjusted according to the specifications of individual foreign market (Cavusgil et al. 2008; Cavusgil et al. 1993; Czinkota and Ronkainen 2007; Shoham 1995; Terpstra and Sarathy 2000; Theodosiou and Leonidou 2003). Different arguments have been given in favor of adaption; some highlighting the variances in the distribution channels (Daniels et al. 2007), while others highlighting the differences in national preferences (Cavusgil et al. 2008; Wind 1986). Such statements have been made by the advocates of adaptation in an effort to claim ad aptation to be a better strategy. And it has been testified that even the giant brands, like Coca Cola and McDonalds, incur numerous adaptation strategies in accordance to their foreign markets (Czinkota and Ronkainen 2007) Analysis and result: Putting it in a nutshell we may say that technological advancement, homogenization of customers worldwide and economic integration pushes organizations to adapt standardization in order to prosper (Buzzell 1968; Cavusgil et al. 1993; Levitt 1983; Sustar 2005). However, on the other hand adaptation proponents are of the view that not only there exist significant differences between customers form different countries but also the technological encroachment in production may even cause eradication to the economies of scale argument. Further proposing that even if it doesnt completely remove the effect of economies of scale; it will reduce the effect to minimal level; hence, making adaptation a better suited strategy in the times to come. Although standardization and adaptation are two viewpoints that contradict each other, it is difficult to claim supremacy of one over the other. Both standardization and adaptation have their benefits, yet that does not imply that a strategy useful for one organization in some specific market will prove to be useful for the same organization in another market or may be for a different organization in the same market. There are number of factors that may influence the decision of adaptation of Standardization or Adaptation (Jain 1989). Massive work has been done in order to identify and chock down a list of different factors influencing the decision of selecting adaptation or standardization, in a very general manner ( Johnson and Arunthanes 1995; Lages and Montgomery 2004; Lee and Griffith 2004; Theodosiou and Katsikeas 2001). Furthermore, ÃÆ'-zsomer et al. (1991) has done a more systematic study of these influencing factors. . Cavusgil and Zou (1994) came up with a further simplifi ed description of the aspects that need to be taken into account when making the decision of choosing to move towards standardization or adaptation. This orderly arrangement has been used by number of academics ( Katsikeas et al. 2006; Michell et al. 1998; ÃÆ'-zsomer and Simonin 2004). Managerial implications: As through the discussion it is clear that both standardization and adaption have their pros and corns and along with a number of other factors influencing the decision of choosing the accurate strategy that will be successful in a particular condition for an organization. For this reason when an organizations decides to go global, their Managers must not think of supremacy of standardization over adaptation or vice versa, rather they need to understand the market they are going in and should also understand their organization along with all the influencing factors in order to decide which strategy, Adaptation or Standardization, would lead the organization towards their major goal of being successful, when responding to the process of globalization. Limitations The above study tries to give deeper understanding about the continued under debate topic of standardization verses adaptation. However, due to shortage of time and resources there might be some areas not covered in this paper. Never the less it adds to the existing body of knowledge and further research could be done in order to understand the phenomenon of standardization and adaptation so as to know which strategy will suit in what kind of conditions, for a particular organization, in order to make the organization not only successful nationwide but also across the globe. Theory of mind (ToM) is a prediction of everyday behaviors based on a personââ¬â¢s mental state. Understanding of false beliefs is a Core ToM, which has usually developed by age 4. By age 7 more advanced skills develop including embedded mental states (ââ¬Ëwhat he thinks what she thinksââ¬â¢) and understanding that emotions can influence other peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs. Developing these skills are important for shaping healthy social interactions and can be important with decoding social cues as well as being able to adjust behaviors. Therefore, those that are delayed in developing ToM could be exposed to social interactions that are negative; because of this they may find it difficult to establish good relationships during their life (Shakoor et al., 2011, p. 254). The major research of this study was whether or not children who were involved in bullying during adolescence had poor ToM in childhood. The theory being tested was that poor childhood ToM can cause bullying during early adolescence. Bullying effects on average 27% of adolescents and children every year. This is a negative social experience that happens worldwide. Children who do not have good ToM are at a greater risk to become involved in bullying situations. This is because ToM skills support social interactions. Children with poor ToM do not have a good understanding of the emotions and intentions of other people. This puts at risk the childrenââ¬â¢s ability to perceive social signals that reveal nonreciprocal interactions, which puts the child at risk of being subjugated or victimized. Poor ToM can also affect childrenââ¬â¢s ability to be able to stand up for th... ...ying, they just took the word of the teachers and the mother. Also if the children hang out with kids at school who are bullies that would influence them to be bullies as well regardless of ToM. I found that the conclusion of the article made sense based on the data of the study. The conclusion stated what should be done to help prevent bullying and listed some training strategies to help improve childrenââ¬â¢s ToM. The authors named all the limitations that I can think of. The main one being that the study does not generalize to all children because the data only came from twins. For future research studies they can compare the data collected from the twins with data collected from children who are not twins. Also they can collect data on what type of bullying was taking place with each child whether it was relational or physical (Shakoor et al., 2011, p. 259 & 260).
